Lübeck

Info

The city of Lübeck is Germany's most important Baltic trading port, situated on the banks of the Trave River, which encircles the entire historic center. It lies 20 km from the sea. This "specific nest," as its most famous resident, Thomas Mann, called Lübeck, is a must-see in Germany. Thomas Mann and Buddenbrook, the Hanseatic League and the Middle Ages, marzipan and "rostpon," French wine aged in local cellars, are just some of the highlights of this fascinating city. Once the most important city in the Baltic at the end of the Middle Ages, it is particularly appealing to lovers of Backsteingotik, a brick Gothic architecture elevated to the status of a national style.

The seven towers that dominate its historic center, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, form a unique ensemble. The interiors of the churches, the facades of the buildings, the city gates, the distinctive town hall, and even the medieval hospital seem like photographs taken from an illustrated history of architecture. Walking through Lübeck is like walking back to the Middle Ages, especially in its old town, where almost all of its important monuments are located. In Lübeck, you can breathe freedom, enjoy its tranquility, and savor its history. The city was beautifully rebuilt after World War II.
