ROSTOCK
Rostock is the largest city in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in northern Germany, and is located on the Baltic Sea coast. The port of Rostock is the hub of much of the city's activity. If you visit in August, you might be able to attend the Hanse Sail festival, which draws millions of people to the port each year. At this festival, you can see up to 300 large sailing ships, launches, cruise ships, ferries, museum schooners, and vintage vessels.
The event takes place in front of the city's Old Town, where you can learn about Rostock's history. The red brick and pastel-colored buildings date back to the 14th and 15th centuries, when the Hanseatic League, a commercial and defensive alliance of merchant guilds, dominated trade along the northern coast of Europe. Explore the eastern part of the Old Town, where you can find historical attractions such as St. Peter's Church, St. Mary's Church, and Fisherman's Bastion.
One of the best ways to explore Rostock is by boat on the Warnow River. While cruising, be sure to check out the Alter Strom, a charming old branch of the river in the riverside suburb of Warnemünde, where you'll find colorful fishermen's houses, small local shops, cafes, and restaurants.
